What is the weather like in Tampa during January?

January is a great time to visit Tampa on Florida's West Coast. Temperatures are mild, weather is very comfortable with any cold spells short lived. Daytime high temperatures this month tend to be mild, averaging near 70f (20-22C).  A few of the warmer days will reach or exceed 80f (about 27C).  Early morning lows this month tend to be in the lower 50s f (10-12C) but a few of the colder morning will dip down to the mid-upper 30sf (2-3C) with about one morning dipping to 32f (0C) or less. In the past Tampa has seen extremes in temperatures during January as high as 86f (30C) and as low as 21f (-6.1C).

 

Skies tend to be sunny or partly sunny on about 20 days in January while some rainfall can be expected on about 6-7 days, however, significant rainfalls of 0.5 inches (13mm) or more are likely only on 1 or 2 days.  Snow is extremely rare and is not an issue.Gasparilla Pirate Vessel


 

What to wear in Tampa in January

A couple of sweaters or a light-weight windbreaker is all you need most days but on those colder days and nights, a medium weight jacket or coat will come in handy.  The area beaches are open, however, the water temperatures this month tend to be on the chilly side, averaging in the lower 60s f (about 17C). 

 

What to do in Tampa during January

From late January into early February, Tampa celebrates its biggest event - The Gasparilla Pirate Festival which includes a pirate invasion and several parades and many other events. While in Tampa, you may wish to visit Tampa's historic Ybor City district or watch the Manatees at the Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center.
